Have your books changed as you’ve got older? There are stories in all parts of life and I read a tabloid newspaper every day, which is always full of interesting tidbits. I’m the one listening to the conversation on the table next to me in a restaurant (sorry!). Time to write them all is the issue! I think to be a writer you have to be a bit nosey. You’ve just published your 26th novel – how do you keep coming up with fresh ideas? The fashion at the time was for big books about people with glamorous lifestyles, yachts and penthouses - of which, I knew nothing! Then the advent of chick-lit or romantic comedy made me realise I had something to say. I was always an avid reader, but I’m a Northern working class lass and I didn’t think people like me wrote books. That book became my first novel, Let’s Meet on Platform 8. On the course, I started a novel and the tutor said it was good enough to send to an agent. I entered a short story competition with the first piece of fiction I’d ever written and won! Then I did the most sensible thing I’ve ever done in my life - I spent the money on a writing course.
